Abstract: Why do we tend to draw such a sharp distinction between the poets, on the one hand, and the scientists and mathematicians, on the other? I would like to illustrate some of the reasons for the apparent gulf between the two camps. In addition, I would like to suggest some of the things the poet and the mathematician have in common and the ways in which the strengths of each might complement the other. Please be prepared for participation and maybe for a creative exercise or two.
If you will be attending the Texas A&M game, please send an email to let me know you will be absent. No makeup will be required, beyond keeping up with the homework and material in chapter 14.
